Ari Had a Ball: Nanu's Fables Book One (Picture Book)

Ari Had a Ball: Nanu's Fables Book One (Picture Book)

A child’s passion for learning and accomplishment is harnessed to attain peaceful rest, sleep, and sweet dreams. The book is also a joyful outlook on the appreciation of life.

In the first book of Nanu's fables, the story focuses on a little boy named Ari who has a love for balls. This passion is so powerful that he doesn’t want to sleep. A surprise solution unfolds which allows him to keep his passion and get sleep at the same time.

The story is an allegory for the celebration of the simple things in life.

RONNIE SWIRE SIEGEL is a landscape architect who spent her career designing nature-based outdoor play and learning environments for children. Her first book, Displaced, received several awards. Her second book is the first in a new series called Nanu's Fables where she seeks to engage children in a ways to help them grow and thrive individually, and connect with their community and with the earth.

Ronnie received a BA in Fine Arts and Natural Sciences from Colgate University and her Masters in Landscape Architecture from University of Pennsylvania.

She lives with her husband in the chaparral hills above Los Angeles.

Displaced: A Story About Climate Change and How Displaced Animals Ring the Alarm (Picture Book)

Displaced: A Story About Climate Change and How Displaced Animals Ring the Alarm (Picture Book)

Fourteen animals around the world are on a journey for survival when climate change displaces them to bizarre new habitats in this interpretive photo illustration picture book. Each story begins with a brief description of the animal’s habitat and why their current home is at risk.

A section at the end of the book provides a summary of facts to help answer children’s questions about climate change.

Based in stark reality, but cushioned in whimsical fantasy, this book is intended to evoke action and emphasize our responsibility as stewards of the earth. Young readers will end the book with an optimistic prediction that we can work together to reverse the course of climate change to make our world enduring for all creatures.

A thought-provoking blend of fantasy and unusual imagery and an urgent call to environmental action. --Kirkus Reviews

Ronnie Siegel considers her life’s work trying to connect children with nature.  Her background as a landscape architect and environmental artist has enabled her to see more acutely than most the everyday effects of climate change.

As a landscape artist, Ronnie has teamed with various groups to reinvent traditional play spaces with a more nature-based focus for urban children.

As an environmental artist, Ronnie recently completed an Interactive Global Art Project called Carry the EARTH, intended to use storytelling to bridge gaps between countries, cultures, ages, and economic divides, and unite people with the common thread that together we can make huge change to protect the planet.

Ronnie received a BA in Fine Arts and Natural Sciences from Colgate University and her Masters in Landscape Architecture from University of Pennsylvania.

She lives with her husband in the chaparral hills above Los Angeles.

The Factory of Maladies: Seven Days on a San Francisco Psych Ward (Memoir)

The Factory of Maladies: Seven Days on a San Francisco Psych Ward (Memoir)

The Factory of Maladies is an unflinching memoir exploring the stigma of mental illness, the danger of cults, and family dynamics. Confused and disoriented, Debbie Hartung awakens in a psych ward, her memories fragmented. The Factory of Maladies tells of her seven-day ordeal, a raw and visceral journey through the dehumanizing routines and unsettling encounters within the institution, written with a compassionate tone and dark humor. It also exposes the role family can play in helping or harming a patient in distress. Additionally, she bravely reveals the inadequacies of our current mental health system. Hartung's narrative exposes the disorientation and complexities of mental illness and a quest for healing amidst the chaos of crisis. The Factory of Maladies is heartbreaking, maddening, humorous, and most of all, hopeful.

Hartung’s courage in writing this book is profound. It is not easy to reveal such raw emotions... it is an important look at mental health and how we treat those we deem to be mentally ill. Her storytelling is spellbinding and riveting, and you will want to stick with the story to find out how it turned out for her. Highly recommended. — John J. Kelly, Detroit Free Press

From the author’s Afterword in the book: “It took me seven years to write The Factory of Maladies because my experience was so intense; while writing, I also processed the PTSD I was experiencing as a result of my hospitalization. I wanted to give up many times...but deep down, I knew that if I completed my memoir, it would be the ultimate catharsis. After I finished and read it in full, I realized that it had the potential to help demystify the preconceived notions around mental illness and also that it might give a fellow sufferer hope and comfort and alleviate feelings of alienation.”

DEBBIE HARTUNG is a San Francisco writer and artist who enjoys traveling and live music. The Factory of Maladies is her literary debut.

Between Methods & Madness by Erik Foge

Between Methods & Madness by Erik Foge

Erik Foge is an acclaimed writer whose Project Pegasus speculative fiction series is currently under consideration for adaptation into a limited series at Netflix and for theatrical acquisition at SONY.

We Know Your Name

At first glance, Dr. Erik Függer appears to be a mild-mannered curator and tour guide for the National Museum of American History. But in reality, he is a part of the CIA's newly formed O.G.D.S. Team 42, a group involved in infiltrating military installations, obtaining secrets of the Third Reich, and avoiding government-sanctioned assassins on the streets of Washington D.C. As Erik pursues dark truths that he knows could get him killed, he is caught up in a tempest of secrecy and lies - all of which he is forced to hide from everyone he knows.

One Way Roads

Governments can change the past…but at what cost? Dr. Függer is a Senior Analyst for the CIA when his research into what would have occurred had Nazi Field Marshal Rommel lived leads him to be recruited for Project Pegasus, a U.S. time-travel exploration program. However, Erik soon discovers that an alternate plan to kill another highly influential individual has already been set in motion. Lost in the past, it’s not long before he finds himself fighting for his very life against unknown operatives intent on preventing his success and changing the world forever.

Book 3 and Book 4 in the series are recent releases:

Horizons Without Boundaries
In book three of the series, Dr. Erik Függer is sent back to 1940 France during the Battle of Britain to prevent a looming global war in 2012. Tasked with dismantling a Nazi fifth column, Erik confronts forces that aim to sabotage America’s future role in WWII.

Between Methods & Madness

In the fourth installment, set in 1961, Erik is called upon by President Kennedy following a personal loss. Learning that the Normandy invasion in 1944 failed in this altered timeline, he returns to correct the course of history, risking everything to restore the truth.

Erik Foge holds a Bachelor's Degree in History, with an emphasis on Russian history and politics, from the University of Central Florida. His passion for history began at age thirteen when his parents sent him to Washington D.C. to learn about the United States and its governmental processes. The trip sparked Foge's interest in the federal government and the individuals within the Intelligence Community who are responsible for shaping the country's national policies. The characters in the Project Pegasus Series are drawn from his friendships and interactions with people from within the Intelligence Community at-large, the NRO; the NSA; the CIA; an Admiral and the Master Chief of the Sixth Fleet; Navy Seals, Astronaut John Glenn, and others.

Erik splits his time between Arizona and Los Angeles with his wife and business partner, Kristina, and their dog Esme.

Vasquez by Rick Avery

Vasquez by Rick Avery

1800’s California, still a Mexican Territory, saw the Gold Rush bring in immigrants from all over the world who spoke hundreds of different languages. The Mexicans referred to them as Anglos. Tiburcio Vasquez was just a boy when he witnessed the legacy of violence and crime that this change would bring, shaping his destiny. He grew up in the dusty streets of Monterey, California, watching as foreigners encroached on his homeland, bringing with them greed and destruction.

As he honed his skills as a horseman and a marksman, he saw firsthand the injustices suffered by his people. He witnessed families torn apart, land stolen, and women abused, and he knew that he could not stand idly by. So, he took up arms by becoming a bandit against those who sought to oppress his people, becoming a legend among the Mexican community. But with each robbery and each murder, Tiburcio could feel the darkness creeping into his soul. He was caught multiple times and escaped multiple times from San Quentin Prison.

Vasquez was and educated poet and dancer loved by the ladies, but feared by all men. This novel is a dramatic fictional account of his life from birth to his hanging at the young age of thirty-nine. At the time, the Mexican community saw him as a Robin Hood character. To this day, there are monuments that bear his name.

Vasquez is Rick’s sixth book. His first was an autobiography co-authored with Tom Bleecker, A Life at Risk. This was followed by a photography book about the homeless in Los Angeles, Sidewalks. Next was a historical adventure about two pilots flying from Sydney to London in the 1963 air race, The Challenge, of the Spirit of Sydney. His career as one of the top stuntmen in Hollywood was published as Too Old to Tell Lies. Hardened Warriors was a book about the Master Boxers who compete into their seventies.

Rick has a Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude from Southern New Hampshire University. He lives in Southern California with his wife and family.

Vessel: a novel by Rie Lee

Vessel: a novel by Rie Lee

DYSTOPIAN FICTION

STAY OR LEAVE. DIE EITHER WAY.

In a ravaged world where survival depends on blind faith, true-believer Paige has one chance to escape an arranged marriage to a boy in her post-apocalyptic cult: by becoming its human sacrifice.

This role requires absolute purity, because the souls of her neighbors rest in her hands – but she’s starting to doubt her ability to deliver them to the afterlife. Not when she doesn’t know what to do with the inappropriate attraction she’s feeling toward another girl – her best friend, Mott.

When Mott and her brother get arrested, Paige finds her beliefs crumbling and faces two choices: hope that she’s pure enough to stay in the strict, zealous love their religion preaches, or run away from her idyllic community to the wastelands outside – to certain death.

... a piercing, beautifully rendered story of a young woman trapped between the demands of a rigid, post-apocalyptic society and her own awakening desires. A love story wrapped in a dystopian thriller tucked into a coming-of-age tale, Vessel hooks you immediately and moves with relentless, bristling tension toward its powerful conclusion. – Shawn Vestal, winner of 2014’s PEN Robert W. Bingham Prize and author of Daredevils and Godforsaken Idaho

RIE LEE (she/her/hers) is a recovering true believer. She's a little too obsessed with cults and almost definitely on some kind of FBI watch list for researching pipe bombs. She is an alum of the MFA program at Eastern Washington University.

Icarus Dawns by Erik James Troy

Icarus Dawns by Erik James Troy

SCIENCE FICTION: Humanity has survived over 500 years on a lifeless planet, but cities there are becoming overcrowded underneath protective domes.

An ensemble of characters with different scientific backgrounds are tasked with uncovering the truth about what happened to humanity’s home world and venture light years into the middle of the untamed universe to a frozen Earth. Their ensuing archeological study holds many secrets - lost technologies, remains of animals that went extinct centuries ago, and long forgotten chapters of human history.

Under the frozen Great Plains of North America, a secret government  research facility houses what may be their only hope for answers.

I have no idea what made me step away from my comfort genre and read this book. The book cover? The title? Both? Maybe the plot? I was getting interstellar vibes, and I had to pick the book up, and I enjoyed every single minute of it. – on line review

Born and raised in the Boston area, Erik James Troy went to school in Cambridge and moved to the town of Andover, MA for the latter half of his childhood.

After graduating from Pratt Institute with a degree in Film and Video, Erik made commercials and social media ads in the Boston area. During this time, he consulted with peers in defense, pharmaceuticals, and educational institutions in Cambridge, Massachusetts while he wrote Icarus Dawns.

Erik now works at Universal Studios and continues to write with the hopes of directing his first feature film in the near future.

FROM THE AUTHOR: Always a science lover, I began writing this novel while talking with scientists in the greater Boston area. Many characters in the book are based on these real people who have lived through real events. Their takes on morality, religion, and philosophy are interesting subjects that come up in the world of science.

To my readers, I would advise you to have an open mind and an open heart. Even the worst of villains have some insight to offer, and the best of heroes are never perfect.

Cacophony of Crowns by Garrett S. Broussard

A Fantasy Anthology...

CACOPHONY OF CROWNS is a discordant collection of short stories chronicling the chaotic rise and fall of power throughout the past, present, and future. Witness as Wren the fisherman deals with mortality, a hedonistic king is confronted with his darkest fears, and Atansha heals a kingdom with the strength given to her by the earth.

This chaotic mythology introduces the reader to the world of the Dark Forest, and all the planets contained within. It is a world filled with magickal beings, powerful rulers, and otherworldly happenings. Here, humans use magick to alter their realities, with some even ascending to gods, but not without finding the true price of power—a price few mortals wish to pay…

Praise for the book:

"A magical journey through so many places, people, and times, one I enjoyed revisiting more than once!"

"Super fun and imaginative."

Inner Space & Outer Thoughts: Speculative Fiction from Caltech and JPL Authors

Edited by Techlit with a foreword by David Brin

Fact ignites fiction in this first-of-its kind anthology of speculative fiction by Caltech and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) scientists, engineers, technologists, and students. Experts at the frontiers of their fields, along with renowned Caltech alumni such as David Brin, S. B. Divya, and Larry Niven, present stories about alien astrobiologists, AI parenthood, a quest to preserve our histories beyond the heat death of our universe, a heist to steal engineering secrets from an ancient monk-scientist, the recovery of a long-lost phase of the human life cycle, the demise of Earth’s first intelligent species—billions of years before the rise of humanity, and much more!

Authors with a fresh perspective on modern science come together in this collection of unique science fiction stories. – online review

TechLit, Caltech’s creative writing club, authored and edited the stories in this collection, typeset the manuscript, and published the book. Amazing Stories and Caltech magazines, respectively, featured articles on the book in their April and May issues, and several of the contributing authors celebrated the launch of Inner Space and Outer Thoughts with a panel discussion at Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium in May.

Patchwork Poems by David Nile Chase

Patchwork Poems by David Nile Chase

From the poet: The poems in this collection are like patches on an Amish quilt. They are all separate and distinct, yet all unified into one complete piece. They are written in rhyme in traditional iambic pentameter.

The qualities I value in writing as in my life are authenticity, clarity and direct experience. Inspiration comes from many of the songwriter lyrics I’ve listened to obsessively since high school from the time of the Beatles, especially Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, and Lucinda Williams. The poems are written to tell stories, my point of view on various social issues, and some, hopefully, to entertain.

David Nile Chase was born in Iowa, spent his childhood in small towns in Illinois and Indiana, and college years in Chicago from 1967-1971, during the turmoil of the student movement against the war in Vietnam. He arrived in LA in the summer of ’71 with the intention of experiencing everything in that zeitgeist after campus life. Chase studied acting and worked many restaurant jobs before going back to school to study psychology at Immaculate Heart College, Hollywood, where he became very interested in cognitive development and researched a link between children’s cognitive development and fairy tales. He went on to teach in the Los Angeles Unified School District for twenty-five years ending in 2012, during which time he wrote many short stories. He has also maintained a tome of journal writing since his university days.
