Memoir + California History + Pregnancy Wellness
The bookstore welcomes three different authors with three different books of varying themes for an afternoon about travel in Tuscany, Route 66 in California, and staying fit and healthy during pregnancy.
Janet Davidson’s book is “Meet Us in Tuscany: A Memoir of Life at the Villa.” Fulfilling a long-time dream, in the summer of 2018 the American author, by design or not, created an unforgettable experience that attending family members and friends will forever mark as a "we-have-to-do-this-again" experience in the beautiful and historic region of Tuscany, Italy. Within the covers of this slim volume, she tells us how she pulled it off and, in the process, gives us an informal "blueprint" of how we too might create our own unique life at a villa in Tuscany.
Janet and her husband, Richard Plat, have a love of travel and a spirit of adventure. There are few countries which they have not visited over their 26-year marriage. Sharing travel and the joy of learning about other places and other cultures with her children and grandchildren is her greatest pleasure. Following a successful career as an attorney, Janet now is focused on family, travel, nonprofits and writing. She lives in Newport Beach and Palm Desert, California.
Joe Sonderman’s book is “California Dreamin: Along Route 66.” (Images of America). The California Dream made Route 66 the most famous road in the world. Flappers dreamed of stardom under the bright lights of Hollywood. A wave of families fleeing the Dust Bowl transformed the state during the Great Depression. During World War II, another wave followed Route 66 seeking opportunity in the massive wartime industrial plants. Thousands of soldiers trained in the Mojave Desert and then returned amid the postwar prosperity to blossoming housing developments that replaced the vast orange groves. While Nat King Cole sang "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66," the newly prosperous middle class hit the road headed for the dream land constructed by Walt Disney. Inspired by the Beat poets, the hippies, and the adventures of Buz and Tod on the CBS television show Route 66, a new generation took to the open road.
Joe Sonderman penned books on all of the other Route 66 states and other works on the signs and lore of the road before turning to the Golden State. His collection of vintage postcards is combined with photographs from highway departments, some modern images, and archival sources to capture the mom-and-pop motels, diners, juke joints, gas stations, restaurants, and roadside attractions that the dreamers sought. Many have never been published before. A special effort was made to research the stories and the people behind the scenery--and the dream.
